Whatever Wednesday: Check Out this List!

Hey, everyone!

I came across a list that I couldn’t stop thinking about last night. Check out  What’s Missing in Contemporary YA? on Steph Su Reads. It’s a goodie.

Of course, number six athletes, I totally agree with – Yay, Steph Su! And acne.. how can we forget about acne? (Writing note to self). I was also excited to see the college application process mentioned – agree. Tackling an athletic spin-off with my current WIP.

What a great list.. And something I spend a lot of time thinking about.. What is missing? What can I write about that hasn’t been done a million times before? How can I entertain the audience and serve up something fresh? Did I mention I love Steph Su for mentioning athletes? :)

What do you think of the list? What do you think is missing in YA lit or any genre? Or do you think it’s all been done?

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I loved Steph’s post too, and I hope the industry will take note of it. I thought of your writing when I saw #6.

  2. I had to laugh at the “homework” one. Yeah, why don’t they have hours of homework to do? LOL

I think missing from the list is a bestselling novel by Keri Mikulski!

Ha, that list is great. Homework and acne were things I worried about ALL the time when I was a teenager. I wouldn’t want to read about characters who think about nothing else, but it would be nice if those “real life” details were acknowledged a bit more.

  5. Thanks for the list–great reading, and so true!

I *love* Steph’s website, and so agree with you on the list. (And hurrah for more sports!)

  7. Great list! Thanks for sharing it. I had to laugh at the part about portraying happy parents who are still together, because the example that came to mind was Audrey, Wait! and that’s exactly the one I’m reading now (which is why it was on my mind).
